Commercial Fox Control:  Fox Control Program at Winton Wetlands

Complete Vertebrate Pest Management (CVPM) was contracted by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) to execute a high-intensity  fox control and predator eradication program. This targeted environmental biosecurity initiative was deployed across the Winton Wetlands reserve in Winton North, Victoria, applying strategic, large-scale field pressure to safeguard vulnerable native wildlife populations.

 

The Threat: Invasive Predators vs. Protected Native Fauna

Invasive European foxes pose a catastrophic threat to the biodiversity of regional Victoria's conservation reserves. Within the delicate ecosystem of Winton Wetlands, unchecked pest populations result in:

  • Decimation of Native Avian Species: Foxes actively hunt vulnerable ground-nesting waterbirds, pelicans, and threatened native birds.

  • Small Marsupial Depletion: Constant predator pressure disrupts the natural breeding cycles and foraging habits of local wildlife.

The Operational Response: DEECA-Contracted Tactical Surveillance

To achieve immediate knockdown metrics on behalf of DEECA, CVPM utilised light weight UTV's and personnel configuration to blanket the reserve. The team executed an intensive, data-driven night control operation:

  • Concentrated Field Pressure: Three professional operators maintained continuous surveillance over three consecutive nights.

  • Mobilised Asset Deployment: Utilising two specialised UTV buggies equipped for remote operations, the team logged 99.5 cumulative hours of intense operational field pressure on the local pest populations.

  • Advanced Targeting Systems: Operators utilised high-end thermal imaging and night-vision optics to locate, track, and target the primary invasive species under complete darkness.

 

The Ecological Impact: Preserving Regional Biodiversity

By maintaining a relentless operational tempo, CVPM delivered a rapid, measurable reduction in localized apex predator pressure, providing immediate relief to the regional food chain:

  • 44 Foxes Eradicated: Eliminating 44 active pest foxes instantly halts an estimated 13,000 to 20,000 potential native fauna casualties annually, drastically reducing the predatory toll on local ecosystems.

  • Feral Deer Control: The removal of 1 feral deer directly mitigates localized erosion and native vegetation stripping along the wetland fringes.

  • Habitat Stabilization: Drastically reducing localized predator densities allows native species—including ground mammals and waterbirds—to safely forage, nest, and regenerate.
