Commercial Rabbit Control: Warren Fumigation Program at Winton Wetlands

Complete Vertebrate Pest Management (CVPM) was contracted by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) to execute a large-scale rabbit warren fumigation program. Managed by licensed commercial operator Complete Vertebrate Pest Management (Licence COL-2182) on behalf of the DEECA, this environmental biosecurity initiative targeted multiple critical conservation zones across Winton Wetlands in Victoria.

 

The Threat: Environmental Degradation & Habitat Destruction

Introduced rabbits pose a severe biosecurity threat to regional ecosystems like the Winton Wetlands reserve. Left unmanaged, heavy pest rabbit infestations result in:

​

• Severe Soil Erosion: Extensive burrowing undermines delicate landscape contours and compromises ancient sand lunettes.

• Flora Suppression: Overgrazing rapidly strips endemic water plants, native grasses, and juvenile gum trees.

• Habitat Loss: Competitive grazing directly impacts the food sources and habitats of native wildlife like eastern grey kangaroos.

 

The Operational Response: Precision Mapping & Fumigation

Operating within a strict 5-day field window, CVPM executed a high-volume eradication program across the wetlands. The technical delivery achieved precise knockdown metrics through systematic warren mapping and fumigation:

​

• Warren Identification: 169 active rabbit warrens were successfully located, mapped, and logged 

• Targeted Structural Treatment: 160 warrens were treated using specialized containment methods, with 9 bypassed as unsuitable for chemical treatment

• Entrada Neutralisation: CVPM technicians systematically sealed and treated 717 distinct warren entrances [From User Input].

• Calibrated Chemical Output: The field operation deployed 1,433 QUICKPHOS Phosphine tablets, averaging 4.24 entrances and 8.96 tablets per treated warren to ensure absolute concentration and maximum efficacy

 

The Environmental Impact: Protecting Regional Biodiversity

By neutralizing subterranean breeding networks, CVPM delivered a rapid, measurable reduction in localized ecological pressure, supporting long-term biodiversity preservation:

• Estimated numbers Eradicated: An estimated removal of 600 active pests, instantly stopping localised browsing pressure 

• Landscape Stabilization: Sealing 717 active entryways helps halt erosion across the Winton North landscape and helps to prevent reinfestation. 

• Vegetation Recovery: Removing intense grazing pressure allows endemic wetland flora and native box grassy woodland habitats to regenerate.
