PROFESSIONAL RABBIT WARREN FUMIGATION

What is Rabbit Warren Fumigation?

Fumigation is one of the most effective methods of rabbit control in Australia, particularly for established infestations where rabbits are protected from surface control methods. By treating the entire warren system, fumigation helps to:

  • Reduce rabbit populations quickly and humanely

  • Prevent ongoing breeding cycles

  • Minimise environmental damage caused by burrowing and grazing

  • Protect agricultural land, infrastructure, and native vegetation

Rabbit warren fumigation is a targeted pest control method used to eliminate rabbits living underground in extensive burrow systems (warrens). This process involves introducing a fumigant gas into active burrows, which penetrates tunnels and chambers where rabbits shelter and breed.

Chemicals Used in Rabbit Fumigation -

The most commonly used fumigant for rabbit control in Australia is Aluminium Phosphide, which releases phosphine gas when exposed to moisture in the soil.

Key features of Aluminium Phosphide:

  • Highly effective in enclosed burrow systems

  • Breaks down into non-persistent residues

  • Suitable for rural, agricultural, and large-scale pest control

  • Widely approved for vertebrate pest management programs

Phosphine gas works by displacing oxygen within the burrow, ensuring a rapid and effective result when applied correctly.

Important: This chemical is classified as a restricted-use pesticide and must only be handled by trained and licensed professionals.

How Rabbit Fumigation is Carried Out -

Our professional rabbit fumigation process follows strict industry best practices to ensure safety, effectiveness, and compliance:

1. Site Inspection & Assessment

We identify active warrens, assess infestation levels, and determine suitability for fumigation.

2. Warren Preparation

Primary warren entrances are located, and a smoking nugget is placed inside the warren/s. A blower is used to force the smoke through the warren helping to identify all entrances to the warren system. All  entrances are located and cleared. Non-target risks are assessed to protect native wildlife.

3. Application of Fumigant

Measured doses of Aluminium Phosphide are placed deep within the burrow system.

4. Sealing the Warren

Entrances are sealed immediately to contain the gas and maximise effectiveness.

5. Monitoring & Follow-Up

Sites are rechecked to confirm success and identify any re-opened burrows.

This method ensures maximum penetration of fumigant gas throughout the warren system, delivering reliable results.
